Do you have a pre-treatment plan?

Adherence to before and aftercare instructions is an important part of getting great tattoo removal results.

• Keep out of the sun for two weeks prior
It is important to keep your skin out of the sun to avoid tanning and sunburn as it can negatively impact your treatment. Fake tan must also be avoided.

• Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthily
Make sure you have had enough to eat and enough fluids before your treatment to keep the skin hydrated.

• Do not wear perfumes or lotions
Your skin must be clean and free from concealers, perfumed lotions, body sprays or alcohol-based products as they can lead to irritated skin.

• Dress comfortably
Make sure you are dressed comfortably for your treatment and wearing loose clothes so your technician can easily access the area.

• Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs before treatment
Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen or medicinal herbal medication for your treatment as it can lead to excessive bruising. Speak with your technician beforehand.

• Maintain general health
It is advised you avoid smoking and drinking before your appointment.

• IMPORTANT: Numbing cream
You must arrive with numbing cream on the area to be treated. A general (any brand) numbing cream can be purchased from your local chemist and a generous layer applied to the area at least 1 hour before your appointment. It is advised to cover the area with clear cling wrap to contain the product on the skin for best results.

What can I expect post-treatment?

• Avoid wetting the area for 8 hours after your treatment
It’s important to keep the area protected and dry so avoid showering or working out. When you do shower use a gentle soap and pat dry. Avoid swimming pools and soaking in water until the area is healed to avoid infection.

• Drink plenty of fluids and maintain general health
Your immune system is working hard so it’s important to drink enough fluids and eat right. Smoking is not advised as it can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment by 70%. Avoid exercise for at least 48 hours after treatment.

• Keep the area hydrated and protected
Avoid direct sunlight for several weeks and wear sunscreen. Keep your skin hydrated through a moisturising agent like vitamin E as well as clean with a topical antibacterial cream.

• Scabbing
You will experience some light scabbing on your tattoo in the days following treatment. Avoid picking scabs or popping any blisters. Once the skin has fully healed and any crusting or scabbing has disappeared, we recommend the regular application of a moisturiser such as Vitamin E. This will help to improve skin hydration, reduce potential itchiness and assist in the ongoing healing and soothing process. You may apply make-up to the tattoo once any broken skin has healed.

• Blisters
You may experience some blistering after your laser treatment. Do not be alarmed by this. This bodily reaction is a normal part of the healing process and often occurs on very large tattoos or areas of low circulation, such as fingers and ankles. Blisters are readily treatable and with the right aftercare, will heal perfectly and leave the skin intact.

If the blisters pop (on their own or accidentally), apply an antibacterial ointment or liquid several times a day and cover them with a dressing or bandage. Continue this care until at least 48 hours after the blisters have burst.

If you have any questions contact the clinic on 0416088104 – Cosmetic Boutique – Brunswick. When you leave our clinic after your treatment, your tattoo will be covered with soothing gel and a sterile dressing. In some cases, we may simply apply a gel without a dressing. After this, you should note;

• Red and warm skin can be expected
As the ink is shattered your tattoo may look white and frosted thanks to heat radiating from the ink particles. Your skin may develop some redness and radiate heat similar to a sunburn which can last several hours to a few days.

• Remove dressing
Remove the dressing after a few hours, removing it either after the gel escapes, before you have a shower, or before you go to bed – whichever happens first. Do not use soaps, body lotions or the like on your tattoo whilst ever it is still healing. Apply Aloe Vera gel regularly (twice per day) for at least 48 hours immediately after treatment.

• Ice the area
After treatment, if possible ice the area to take the heat out of the area and relieve the skin. Repeat this several times in the ensuing 48 hours.

• Swelling and bruising are common side effects.
As your body reacts to the treatment swelling and bruising are a common side effect, especially in larger tattoos. This is completely normal and can last up to 2 weeks. You may experience some light oozing from your tattoo in the days after treatment. This is common, especially in the case of large tattoos, and is the result of the swelling trying to escape. Simply dab dry any oozing and cover it with a bandage if necessary, to protect your clothes.
